Ring guide
Choosing a ring
Shape: round brilliant sparkles most. Oval, pear and marquise look longer on the finger. Emerald cuts show clarity, so choose a cleaner stone.
Setting: four or six claws hold the stone high. A halo frames it with small stones. A bezel wraps it, which is the most secure for active hands.
Metal: platinum is dense and hard wearing. 18 ct gold is softer and comes in yellow, white and rose.
The four Cs: cut, colour, clarity and carat. Cut matters most for sparkle.
